Future Vaginal Gels May Prevent HIV
New research from the Tulane National Primate Research Center supported claims that vaginal microbicide gels may protect women against the sexual transmission of HIV type 1.
The study used microbicide gels to protect rhesus macaque monkeys against the spread of various strains of simian/human HIV.
The study proved that the gels were successful in preventing the spread of infection from 3 different types of simian/human HIV viruses.
However the protection that was observed was dependent on the dose that was given. When the dose was higher the primates resisted infection. The gel that was used targeted the main cellular receptor that HIV uses to infect cells.
