Great reasons to walk.

Walking is a simple and great exercise.  It can help you to burn calories, increase circulation, reduce cancer risks, and ease insomnia.  These are great reasons why the medical community has been pushing walking for years.  Some more great reasons to walk are listed below.

1. Walking is great for your heart.  This is great news because heart disease is the leading cause of death in America.  One in every five deaths is attributed to heart disease.  A study recently conducted at Duke University showed that walking for at least 30 minutes daily can reduce the odds of developing a metabolic syndrome associated with heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

2. Walking is great for the breasts.  Walking for a few hours weekly can severely reduce the risk of breast cancer.   Walking helps to burn calories, thereby reducing body weight, a significant source of estrogen.  High amounts of estrogen have been linked to the development of breast cancer.  A study of post menopausal women age 50 to 79, reduced their likelihood of developing breast cancer by 30% if they were at a normal weight, and those that were over weight reduced their chances by 10-20%.

3. Walking can help reduce insomnia.  Walking boosts the levels of the hormone seratonin, which produces feelings of wellness and helps to relax you.  Another theory is that it raises the body temperature, which then signals the body to lower it later; promoting sleep.

4. Walking helps to protect your bones.  Walking just 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week helps to prevent and treat thinning bones.  Walking uses 95% of the muscles in the human body, which pushes your bones to strengthen to handle the work load.

5. Walking helps the brain.  Even if you only walk 45 minutes a week, it will help to reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s.  Walking has been linked to retaining mental sharpness in senior citizens.  Walking and talking at the same time also adds benefits to ward off Alzheimer’s.

6. Walking keeps you slimmer or can help you slim down.  Walking for a minimum of 30 minutes a day can help to keep those who are usually inactive at the same body weight.   Studies show that women who walk for at least an hour, 5 days a week and only consumed 1500 calories lost and kept off up to 25 pounds a year.

Great uses for Olive Oil

Published by mradcliff under Natural Medicine Edit This

Olive oil is great for more than just cooking.  In fact, it has numerous uses including easing ear aches, polishing metals, as a hair conditioner, and as a skin conditioner.  Below are some great uses for this miracle oil.

One of the most frequent health problems in children is ear aches.  In fact, they are so prolific that often children are over-treated with antibiotics or worse,  are forced to undergo surgery to implant tubes to assist the ears in proper drainage.

Olive oil can be a great remedy for ear aches.  Application is easy.  Warm the olive oil up just a bit, so its barely above room temperature.  Using a syringe place 2 -4 drops in each ear for children 2 and older.  This can also be used on adults, just change the dosage to 5 - 10 drops in each ear.  It is best to follow up with your pediatrician.

Another great use for this wonder oil is to polish stainless steel.  Many people are opting for the complete stainless steel kitchens.  They look great, but are a pain to keep clean and shiny.  An inexpensive way to keep your kitchen shiny is to use olive oil to polish it.  Just apply a very light layer of olive oil with a soft cloth in a  circular motion and your kitchen will shine like it was brand new.

Olive oil can also be used to condition the hair and skin.  Applying olive oil to dry or damaged hair is a great way to revive it.  Just completely saturate the hair with olive oil and wrap up with a warm towel.  Leave the towel wrapped up for about 20 minutes, then shampoo, rinse, and condition.

Olive oil can also be used to soften skin.  The fatty acids in olive oil help to soften rough elbows, knees, hands, and even cuticles.  At night, just rub a bit of extra-virgin olive oil into the dry areas of the skin for a renewing, moisturized feel.

Great Alternatives for Pain Remedies

Published by mradcliff under Natural Medicine Edit This

If you are tired of the side effects from traditional western medicine treatments, why not try an alternative.  There are many great alternatives for relieving pain.  One of the greatest and most effective is hypnotherapy.  Hypnotherapy works by inducing a state of deep relaxation, this works to distract your mind and body from its normal pain signals.  Hypnosis has been proven to work so well that it can be used to replace anesthesia.  It can also be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, and eczema.  It has also been proven to boost the immune system.

A common ailment in America is heartburn and acid reflux; which is usually treated with an antacid like Rolaids, or Zantac.  These medicines work by neutralizing the acids in the stomach.  A great inexpensive natural alternative is gum.  Chewing gum after a meal increases the production of saliva, which naturally works to wash the stomach acids back down the esophagus and into the stomach.

Music is a great alternative to pain killers and a great excuse to buy an mp3 player.  A recent study in Ohio, involving 40 pain sufferers, showed a reduction in pain of 12 to 21% after listening to an hour of music.  The use of music has been noted to reduce pain after surgery, labor pains, and assist in burn treatment.  Some other great reasons to listen to music is that it can boost the immune system, reduce high blood pressure and insomnia, and help to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients.  The best method for listening to music was with the use of headphones, to reduce or block background noises.

Millions of women suffer from a degree of PMS symptoms each month.  Chaste Tree Berries are a great way to reduce these symptoms.  It works particularly well for tenderness in the breasts.  Another great remedy for PMS is healthy fats.  Omega-3 fatty acids help to reduce inflammation.  Healthy fats work to reduce menstrual cramps by reducing the inflammation that causes them.

There are many great natural remedies on the market today.   Many of them work just as well as traditional medicines, except usually without any or little side effects.  It is best to read reports to decide which ones are right for you.

Help for Hayfever

It’s that time of year again. The flowers start to bloom and the bees are buzzing, but so is your head. It’s also time for spring time allergies, namely hayfever. Every year millions of people are affected by seasonal allergies and dutifully drive to their pharmacy or retail outlet and purchase anti-histamines to hault their allergy symptoms.

Many people are unaware that you can actually reduce or stop allergies using natural, alternative methods. There are two great ways to reduce allergy symptoms; nasal rinses and nasal creams. A nasal rinse is usually a solution made up of salt, water, and a sprinkle of baking soda. Using the rinse 2 0r 3 times a day helps to rinse the excess mucus and allergens out of the nasal passage. The salt in the solution works much like a nasal decongestant to shrink the inflamed blood vessels in the nose.

Nasal creams are another great alternative to anti-histamines. These are usually a petroleum-based ointment that is applied to the inside of the nose. A recent study found that using a nasal cream reduced allergy symptoms by 60%. Nasal creams work by reducing inflammation and creating a barrier that allergens can’t get through. Nasal creams are not on the market yet, but if you dab a bit of petroleum jelly (vasaline) on the end of a Q-tip, it should work just as well.
